Review – Gran Turismo 2 (PS1)

1-2 Players

Graphics: 9/10
Very nice graphics of over 50 different cars.  The cars look identical to their real
life counterparts as well.  The tracks have nice texture effects, and you actually seem
like you are driving at the speeds you are, unlike some racing games.  There is fairly
little pop up, which is always a plus.  The graphics can seem a bit rough sometimes but
not enough to detract from the enjoyment.

Music and Sound: 9/10
The soundtrack to this game is great.  Nearly a dozen different songs by real, well known
artists such as Garbage, Rob Zombie, Beck, and the Cardigans to name a few.  I suppose
you may not like the music much if you don’t like rock or techno music, but the soundtrack
does fit the feel of the game.  The sound effects are about average for a racing game,
tire squeals, crashing sounds, engine sounds.  There is also some little difference in
the way each car sounds as well.

Gameplay: 7/10
It is a racing game after all.  There are a lot of tracks and a lot of cars but it is
still driving around in a circle over and over.  There are two disks in this game, the
first being the arcade disk, which is 1 or 2 players, where you pick a car and race it,
the second disk is simulation mode, which is only one player and you race for money in
order to buy new cars and upgrade your cars.  As a bonus you can use the cars you gain
in simulation mode in the arcade mode.

Overall: 8.3/10
I really enjoyed this game when I first bought it, but then I found out the hard way I
had a defective version.  It seems the initial release of this game was very buggy and
in some cases it will erase all your cars you have in your garage.  This is a strong
fault with this game.  IU have played it very little after having my garage erased for
the third time.  IT’s just too repetitive.

Tip: The easiest way to get money fast is to win cars and sell them.  I would recommend
the middle track in the muscle car cup.  The Cobra you win there is worth 75,000 dollars.

Review – RBI Baseball (NES)

1-2 Players

Graphics: 5/10
Short squatty ball players don’t quite compare to some baseball games, especially
these newer once where the player look like themselves.  This is a pretty early game
I believe though, so it’s hard to expect much.  At least they are human for the most
part.

Music and Sound: 3/10
There is like 1 tune in this whole game, it consists of 1 sound repeated at several
notes, every 10 notes or so.  It is VERY repetitive.  The sound effects are mostly
squeals of various kinds.  The ball pitching, the ump’s calls, etc.

Gameplay 4/10
The computer AI is quite predictable, and it’s nearly flawless, which can be quite
annoying.  If you hit a pop fly the computer will ALWAYS catch it for one.  However
it is quite easy to trick him into striking out.  If you can get into a groove it’s
really easy to win the game by the built in 10 run rule.

Overall 4/10
Not a bad game really considering it’s age.  Fun for a round or two of screwing around.
The overall score is just an average of the other scores or I may have set it a bit higher.

Tip: Use the sidearm or whatever they are called pitchers (The have a different animation
when pitching).  Pitch from the side the pitcher pitches from all the way to the opposite
side for easy strike outs.  This works for the most part.  It also makes it easy to
purposely hit the batter with the ball.

Review – Mischief Makers (N64)

1 Player

Graphics: 9/10
Despite being one of the few 2D games for the N64, I think the graphics on this game are amazing.  Very colorful, very detailed manga styled graphics.  Had this game included actual anime cut scenes it would have possibly been a 10.  Unfortunately the N64 is unsuited for FMV and the cut scenes are limited to sprite movement.  Anyway I really like the look of this game.

Music and Sound: 6/10

Nothing too spectacular.  The music is all similarly styled and is ok, but there has been better.  The sound effects are what you would expect, explosion, jumping sound etc. Marina’s “Shake Shake” gets somewhat annoying after the 5 billionth time you hear it, which is a drawback.  The speech is ok though there isn’t much of it.

Gameplay: 9/10

A nice original style for a side scrolling game.  Also since all the N64 games seem to the 3D clones of each other this game is a refreshing break in that repetition.  Basically you go around beating up on these little ball guys called Clancers with various objectives in each level.  some of the levels are laughably short however, but there are 60 levels to go through so it is somewhat made up for.  Also the more gold gems you have found (there is one in each level) the more of the ending you get to see, which adds to the replay value.

Overall 8/10

Another for the list of top 5 games here.  I love this game a lot.  I can see how it might turn some people off though since the whole thing is rather bizarre.  Also being a 2D game and not all that hyped I don’t think it did too well.  I would recommend it, especially if you like silly Anime style action.

Tip: There is a ‘Surprise Ending’ so it is somewhat worth it to get all 60 gold gems.  Don’t quit because you think that the rest of the ending is going to be credits.

Review – Bubble Bobble (NES)

Bubble Bobble Site Banner

1-2 Players

Graphics: 7/10
Pretty decent graphics.  The enemies and such all look like what they are supposed to
for the most part.  They are a bit cutesy looking overall but then the game itself is
supposed to be cutesy.  For the most part all sprites are block sized creatures except
the end boss which is huge.  An overall colorful environment.

Music and Sound: 4/10
The sound effects are fairly repetitive.  For the most part Bub and Bob (the two dragons)
have the only read sound effects.  The jump and shoot bubble for sound.  Occasionally an
enemy shoots stuff for a new sound effect.  The music is what really brings this score
down.  Let’s put it this way, there are like 2 songs in the entire game.  There’s the
regular theme, which repeats about every 10 seconds, and the end boss battle theme, which
is really fast and seems like it repeats sooner.  Anyway, the music isn’t so bad that it
gets annoying after repeating so much, but it is a it repetitive.  Due to the continuous
nature of the play though it sort of fits.

Gameplay: 7/10
Quite a fun game for two players.  Kind of boring alone though.  It features two player
simultaneous play and really it’s a bit harder on one player.  And despite other
multiplayer games I still play this one once in a while with others.  The action is
incredibly repetitive which may be a turn off, but it’s repetitive in the same way Tetris
is, in that it is addicting and fun.

Overall: 6/10
A decent multiplayer jam with some nice, silly graphics.  I would recommend this game for
pretty much anyone, though I suppose some people may find it’s cutesiness a bit of a turn
off.

Tip:
Use the password “DDFFY” to select any level.

Review – Shadowgate Classic (GBC)

1 Player

Graphics: 6/10
I’m sure they would be a bit better if I had a GBC to play this game on, however since I
only have an original black and white GB, it kind of limits the graphics.  Also some of
graphics aren’t all that great.  The perspectives seem weird, ect.  They are identical to
the NES version of this game.  The menu set up is different, but this is more to accommodate
the smaller GB screen.

Music and Sound: 6/10
Not all that many sound effects.  Doors opening, the occasional fire blast.  It’s not much
of an action game.  The music changes at least every once in a while.  The music tends to
match the mood, it gets suspenseful when something evil appears, etc.  Nothing all that
spectacular.

Gameplay: 6/10
A nice puzzle solving game.  I think I’d have enjoyed this game a bit more if I hadn’t
played it so many years ago on the NES.  There is fairly little replay value in this game.
Once you play through once and now what to do it’s the same thing every time.  It’s not
even action filled like an RPG would be.  This is the biggest drawback of this game.

Overall: 6/10
If you like Uninvited or Deja Vu (both NES) then I would recommend this game.  If you
really liked this game on NES and don’t have a copy I would say go ahead and get it, but
you may find it’s not all that hard.

Tip: Not many codes for this game.  Just make sure you pick up everything you can and
save often.
