In the News (2026.09.13)

Hopefully I remember it, but I had a good name for this but forgot it before I wrote it down. That’s why I make these notes so I can better remember things. Anyway, I have decided to try something new here, maybe it will become a regular thing. Essentially the idea is to sort of talk about recent-ish random news stuff that I want to talk about. It doesn’t even have to be from “last week” or “the upcoming week”. Weekly Wrap Up on Saturday is looking back, these posts, will be a bit looking ahead.

I don’t plan for topic limits either on these. Toys and Movies like today? Some tech announcement? The fascists do more stupid heinous shit in the US? Some new song drop? Video Game news? It’s all fair game.

If it works out I will move the RSS headlines to these posts though.

Godzilla Minus Zero Trailer

We got a proper trailer for the upcoming Godzilla Minus Zero recently. I really liked Godzilla Minus One a lot. It has that much more enjoyable story style of Japanese Godzilla, with some of that “grounded a bit” with it’s big lizard, but also has the modern effects and effort of Legendary’s Godzilla series. Don’t get me wrong I like the style of the Legendary stories, but I kind of hate all the stuff going on around the monster part of the story. The strange pointless subplots that seem to only exist as a way to stick a few more stars’ names in the credits.

Godzilla Movies have always had a lot of “humans” content, and it’s not like most of these films are the pinnacle of story telling, they are more often very goofy and cheesy. But the Legendary films increasingly feels a bit off.

Anyway, Minus Zero. So there is one big obvious tell right at the end there, with Ghidorah’s cry. It feels way too soon to get Ghidorah. Godzilla often needs assistance to fight Ghidorah, Mothra, Anguirus, Rodan, etc. Plus Ghidorah is like, the Thanos of Godzilla, you need some build up. I guess for this universe Ghidorah is the Dr Doom of the universe, big bad coming out of nowhere.

If it were a US made film I would call it a fake out teaser. Like Ghidorah only shows up in the last minute teasing Godzilla Plus One or something.

It feels like there are less obvious clues here. With the focus on Noriko so much, I am getting some real Mothra vibes. Hell, I kept getting that from her character in Minis One. There is also the line about “Fight fire with Fire”, which could refer to Mothra to fight Godzilla, or even just some attempt to befriend Godzilla to fight Ghidorah. I seriously doubt they jump to Mechagodzilla so soon. The buildup and tech just isn’t there, especially given the setting of this film is like, maybe 1950s Japan.

Mattel Hot Wheels Bumblebee

There has been a lot of chatter about this thing this week. And everyone makes jokes about how it looks like a child in a coat, or Bee got pregnant, or became an alcoholic.

It’s a bit weird looking, yes. But I kind of like it. Because it’s weird. I also believe it’s the size of a Hot Wheels car, and it’s probably die cast like a Hot Wheels car. I want one BECAUSE it’s goofy and ugly.

But apparently the price is… $65. That’s a lot. That’s like, a LOT for a 1:64 car that turns into an ugly robot. It’s at least 4x more than it really should be, even accounting for how stupid expensive everything has gotten. If it were $20 I would balk at it. If it were $15, I would get it, and be irritated it cost so much.

It’s $65.

Somehow.

It’s going to flop so so terribly, and it’s not going to be because it’s ugly and weird it’s going to be because it’s too fucking expensive.
