I didn’t post last week, and almost didn’t this week, it’s been a bit of a slow non eventful couple of weeks. Nothing really new going on at all. But it’s Blaugust, so I should post, because it’s kind of “easy filler”.
Life
Eat, Sleep, Work, Repeat, Eat, Sleep, Work, Repeat, Eat, Sleep, Work, Repeat…
Not quite as fun as raving I suppose. I’ve had a bit of interesting excitement going on at work that I really probably can’t really discuss, so that’s fun.
Not much exciting honestly. I finally got around to putting up actual netting around the little pergola thing I have over my garden. Maybe I can finally get some food out of it. I feel like I have a lot fof nice healthy looking plants, for the most part, but the stupid deer eat all my peppers and tomatoes. I have had this problem before. I was hoping moving everything up to this little concrete patio space would deter them, but it has not. So it’s net time.
I took a short detour this morning down to the 150th anniversary party for the city library. It was a lartger event than expected, and seemed larger because the farmer’s market was going on, but it was very very geared towards children, so I only spent maybe ten minutes walking the loop of activities before leaving.
I also had an issue with my car window but I’m posting about that all it’s own later.
Music
I didn’t go to the bi weekly free concert. My parents were out of town and my daughter wasn’t feeling up to it (my wife does not go to these outdoor shows at all). So nothing going on there.
Last post I mentioned that stack of CDs, and I’ve ripped and sorted them all, along with a whole pile of others that I had collected up a while back but had not ripped yet. Last year, hell, maybe two years ago, I bought a paper box full of CDs at a garage sale for like, $20 or something. I sorted through and picked out all the ones I wanted, sold the rest at our own garage sale for like a buck each. These have been sitting on a shelf in a stack for a while now. I’m almost caught up again on ripping CDs. I have a pile of “ambient music” that I still need to go through. A lot of these are sort of, generic European folk style music, Celtic, Irish, Norwegian, etc, mostly instrumentals.
It’s “Ambient Music”.
I did get something new though, there was a sort of random surprise drop by Hayley Williams of Paramore on her website of a handful of tracks. They are quite “current events charged” and pretty good from what I’ve listened to so far.
Gaming
Still mostly just Overwatch. I’ve gone back a bit to Animal Crossing Pocket Camp and Pokemon TCG Pocket, if you can call what I do “playing” those games. I tried to get back to Sky: CotL when the new season started but I just sort of… did like two days of dailies and dropped out. It might have been one day.
I also started messing with the C64 mini a bit, but that will get it’s own post at some point. Spoiler, the included Joystick controller is extremely ass.
Toys
Nothing new, but I did have one of the handful of pre-orders I’ve kept drop into my pile of loot with Commander Class Ultra Magnus. Ultra Magnus is probably my favorite Autobot, so I’m looking forward to this one. I probably won’t ship it until like, October though. I have Omega Supreme on Pre-order if I can manage to keep it (because money) and I’ve got the 3 Pack deal of Jazz, Bumblebee and Wheeljack in Cybertronian versions in October. I’ll probably ship after that. Maybe after Omega Supreme.
TV
Mostly been sticking with more Law and Order Organized Crime. More or less just wrapped up Season 4, so I am now on the current season. I ha e to admit, I really have not been “feeling it” with that se plot lines since somewhere in Season 2.
And I think I know why. The show recently added a second “Tech Person”. This was basically the roll of Jet Slootmaekers. Jet is, was, a pretty interesting character, mostly because cause she was a Detective that didn’t really feel like she filled the stereotype of the detectives. I say, was, because the “She is a detective” kind of felt like a subtle retcon, it was never really stated if she was when Stabler recruited her. Also was because her character has gone kind of… Weirdly, for a while. I don’t mind her doing more field work, but given her previous character, it feels like she should have been a bit less… Gun go? Capable? Basically, she started feeling like just, another detective a bit.
I have a point here.
Anyway, back to the new tech guy, Vargas. When looking up info on other people’s thoughts on why they replaced Jet with Vargas, who has his quirks, is not quite as interesting, I came across discussion about Jet’s characterization, and the show-runners. Basically, the show has had like, 7-8 show runners, over not quite 5 seasons. The original show-runner had plans and a vision for Jet, and the ones after basically had no idea how to handle her character.
I feel like this explains a bit why the show feels less interesting as its gone on as well. The original person or people had a plan and a scope, and we are so far removed, the show has lost the plot so to speak.
Like Season 1 had this solid arc. Then they had this alright bit with Eliot undercover. Then we went back to wrap up the season 1 plot. Then it started getting more… episode of the week in nature. Threads that are not really connected. Now we have all this focus on Stabler’s family, which were vaguely mentioned in SVU I guess like 2 times, but we have seen this character now for a while across 2 series, and suddenly he has all these brothers hanging around.
The family plot is not bad, but it also feel like it kind of ended and will go on as yet another loose thread. Which goes back to “lost the plot.” It feels like early on they were real good about subtle set ups that paid off later. But now there are just, blatant set ups that go nowhere and get forgotten.
