What I’ve Been Up To (2025.07.19)

Its been a busy week this week.

Days off always screw me up. On Tuesday I was off and ordered dishwasher tabs on Amazon because no one carries the ones we use in town anymore (orange gel packs). It says “Deliver tomorrow”. I thought “I kind of hate having some delivery person working Sunday but we are out of them.

Then the next morning I was putting dishes in the dishwasher thinking, “No wait, I guess yesterday (Tuesday) was Sunday, because I am going to work today, so the next day thing isn’t so bad.”

“Wait, its Wednesday.”

I had two and a half days off this week from things going on.

Tuesday was a trip to Champaign with my wife and daughter to some doctor’s appointments, with some running around mostly to thrift shops in between.

I had a half day on Wednesday to go visit my parents’ and some out of state family that was in town. That was enjoyable, I don’t see them too often anymore since they are all out of state. It was also nice to be assured that they have not all become crazies in terms of politics and world opinions.

Then Thursday was another day off so I could drive to my wife to Springfield to get her heart monitor removed. Except that got cancelled, so I spent the day playing Overwatch and Installing Linux.

Music

The busiest of my regular hobbies this week was music for sure. Sunday was another free concert at Rock Springs, this round was The Hood Family Band. I saw them last year at these events as well. They are alright, mostly covers of classic feel good music, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Youg, George Harrison, The Beatles, Neil Young, that sort of thing. Usually the more toned down tracks from those sort of groups.

While thrifting on Tuesday I picked up a stack of CDs for cheap. I still buy a lot of used CDs, its the most efficient way to acquire music and always check rummage sales and used stores and the estate sales I go to. Usually its just a bunch of Christian and Classical music I don’t care about, but this place had a bunch of Greatest Hits albums from bands I do care about and at 69 cents each I couldn’t pass it up.

A Stack of CDs

Lynyrd Skynyrd, Fleetwood Mac, REO Speedwagon, Bruce Springsteen, and Foreigner are all greatest hits albums. The REM album isn’t but it has some good ones on it. The Norah Jones one, I may actually already have, but it was the “I think I decided I like this” pick up. Then later I found that, I do indeed already have this album. Whoops.

Probably the most “interesting” are the three Grey’s Anatomy discs. These were my risky buy. I pick up a fair amount of random music from TV, TuneFind and Soundhound are great for identifying those random background songs in shows. Its a great way to pick up some lesser known artists sometimes. I want to say when my wife and I were watching Grey’s Anatomy, it had a pretty decent soundtrack, so these should have a fair number of good modern indie-ish racks on them.

Toys

Thursday’s trip also meant making a trip to Ollie’s, which I seem to manage maybe once every 6 months now that I have one close. Last time a few months ago, they had nothing of interest. This round was different, and I lucked out because these two GI Joe packs started getting spotted at these stores the day before or something. I snagged both, which was the main thing I was looking for.

I have not messed with it yet, but I didn’t realize the dude came with a parachute, which is extra neat.

They had a huge mess of Transformers… Whatever scale the small ones are called now, Legends scale I think Core Class. There were only like 3 or 4 different ones though. I picked up G1 Ironhide. I love his goofy lame van mode. Funny enough I think this is the second G1 Ironhide I have gotten in the last year, as I recently got the Voyager version. I also picked up a Terrorcon Freezer. I kind of wanted multiple Freezers since it turns into a gun, bjt I decides not to. Kind of glad I didn’t because he is finicky all around. Freezer also is explicitly designed to work with RotB Scourge, which I do not have.

Lastly, and a surprising one, they had a couple of Transformers Legacy Strong Arms. So I picked her up as well. Its one I almost got at full price a few times but had passed on for various s budget related things. Plus I have the regular original Strong Arm and its not a terrible toy despite being from the “kids line”. This new one is decent, though it kind of feels like a side grade than an upgrade.

They kind of feel like a lesbian cop couple together.

Gaming

Nothing new to report other than traveling around is great for Pokemon Go. Plenty of places to do Dynamax battles when actually moving about frequently. I keep forgetting to delete friend gifts when out and about though, so I can get gifts that are not the boring church next to my job to send to people. I feel like I am secretly propagandizing people.

And more Overwatch, because I can’t stop won’t stop and apparently I am a masochist.

Also since it’s sort of gaming, my one “Amazon Prime Days” buy came in, though I am not sure it was on sale because of Prime Day. It was like, way cheaper than normal. I have not messed with it yet because it literally came in today after some slow shipping.

I got this C64 Mini. I’ve wanted to get one for a while, the Commodore 64 was essentially the first computer/game device I ever used. Plus if I am reading things right, these are ready to just, take ROMs, no hacking or anything required.
