Twenty Years of Last.fm

So this is a bit of an estimate, because there are several pages of songs listed as “Unknown Date”. I’m not sure how that happens, but looking at my Scrobble History on last.fm, my first Scrobble was on June 8th, 2005, with the track “Katamari on the Rock” by 三宅優. That would be, the main theme to Katamari Damacy. I can actually see that being my first Scrobble. Afterwards I apparently rolled (aye, get it) into the soundtrack for Cowboy Bebop.

Anyway, I’ve not been super consistent over the years, a lot of my listening has happened in the last 7 years or so when I started really ramping up my interest in music and listening overall, and I know it pales in comparison to some folks, though I’ve seen some very questionable numbers passed around. I’ve managed to amass a total of around 35,500 songs Scrobbled.

That is around 1775 Scrobbles per year, or not quite 5 songs listened to per day.

I’m not sure if that’s a lot or not honestly. And it certainly doesn’t include everything.2006, 2007, and 2015 have zero tracks Scrobbled, for one. I listened to CDs a lot early on, especially since digital music wasn’t nearly as easy to use back then, at least not when you were poor like I was, without a fancy phone. I had an app for my Blackjack II that would basically record all the songs played to a text file, then when I remembered, I would plug it in and it would manually Scrobble everything.

Looking back at that early history, I do sometimes listen to the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack, though I have that on Vinyl now, so it doesn’t get Scrobbled. Probably the oldest song that I still regularly listen to was one from June 14th with Freezepop’s Tracy Gold, from the album Freezepop Forever.

Fun side fact, that CD was one of the first things I ever bought on Amazon, and because of their retroactively adding an MP3 copy of it to my account, it’s technically one of the oldest MP3s I’ve bought.

There are a few that have had some staying power in my top overall tracks, despite that I don’t listen to them as much these days. Avril Lavigne and BT are both still in my top ten. Both showed up very early and have lasted for the long term.

A lot fo my taste lately has taken quite a different turn from those early years. I used to have a lot more electronic and Japanese music going on. These days it’s a lot more Indie Euro Pop, for lack of a better description for it. Indie Acts that come out of European countries. I have always kind of had a wide range of tastes, though I tend to avoid country music and as much as I would like to think I don’t, I avoid classical music as well. I had a big Rap/HipHop phase for a while but it didn’t really last.

Unlike my top artists, my top albums are almost completely dominated by recent tastes. One thing that happened when I started really taking my listening a bit more seriously was I started listening to albums instead of singles. Just bring it up, and press play. Start to finish.

It’s also dominated by my top artists. Every single Aurora and Chvrches album is in that top albums list (well, the albums, not the EPs necessarily). Avril Lavigne’s Let Go is still up there though. Just shows how much I was obsessed with that album for a time.

Anyway, I do plenty of other music wrap ups so I don’t really need to repeat the same points I’ve probably covered before, I just figured it would be appropriate to write something up for that notable milestone.
