Weekly Wednesday Haul – Black Friday Edition

This weeks haul is going to be a bit more of a list with notes than anything, it’s a little bit of catch up and a lot of bit of things that aren’t toys.  Toys don’t really go on sale around Black Friday in any meaningful way, at least not the ones I care about buying.  What does go on sale are Video Games and Movies.

I played this during the open beta deal before release but didn’t really care for it enough to pay $60 for it.  I don’t generally pay full retail for games ever, $50 is nuts for a game, anything more puts it right out.  Pretty much everywhere has had it on sale for 40% off though all week, so I picked up Overwatch.  I like the concept and I could use something to fill the TF2 shaped hole I’ve had for a while.  I think my biggest issue, and why I didn’t buy it at release, the game has a severe lack of community.  At least, nowhere near the level TF2 had.  TF2 was pretty much all community run servers, I even was admin on a server for a while with a group of friends.  Overwatch, barely anyone ever speaks on voice or even text types.  It’s very… lonely.  It isn’t help that every match seems to be pretty much random folks, so it seems hard to make friends like you would having a “regular TF2 server” to hang out on and see the same people constantly.

The Secret World

I finished up Wildstar recently, by which I mean, I made it to level 50 and stopped playing.  I have a handful of other MMOs I want to play through to max level or so, The Secret World is one of them.  Funcom had a deal for the entire compliment of DLC at around $20, so I figured what the hell.  I still want to push through Guild Wars 2 and Lord of the Rings online as well (bought all of the LotRO DLC in a similar deal last year).

Battlefield 1

I generally don’t play this sort of game but I keep seeing videos and GIFs that make it seems pretty boss.  I have not really played it yet since I ordered a boxed copy of an online code, since that was what was on sale for cheaper.

Hawkeye Vol 2 (Hardcover)

Every year Barnes and Noble has a 40% coupon around Black Friday and every year I end up ordering something on my “books I want but want to pay less for list”.  I already have Volume 1 and I am pretty sure there is only a Volume 2 to complete the set.  There were some softcover releases that had 4 volumes but each of the hardcovers is equivalent to two of the soft cover books.

Marvel Legends Jean Grey

Just before the holiday I ordered Jean Grey from the Juggernaut wave.  She is a bland as expected and I pretty much just ordered her to complete my Juggernaut.  The juggernaut is pretty good and other than a lack of neck armor, he’s better than my old Toybiz Juggernaut.

  • The Amazing Spiderman 1 and 2 (BR) – Yeah it’s being rebooted but I like all of these superhero movies.
  • Mocking Jay Vol 2 (BR) – Each year on Black Friday I’ve bought a Hunger Games movie for cheap, I guess this is the last year.
  • X-Men Apocalypse (BR) – Bringing me up to date on my X-men movies
  • Game of Thrones Season 3 (DVD) – Last year I picked up S1 and S2, I was hoping for S3 and 4 this year but only 3 was available
  • The Hobbit Trilogy (BR) – Mostly because I didn’t have it
  • The Lord of the Rings 2 Disc Set (BR) – I have the fancy Book Design Extended DVD set but I’d like to have this on Blue Ray plus this saves the shelf life of my fancy set.

Weekly Wednesday Haul – This Kooky Brawn Edition

Combiner Wars Computron

Computron may be the final cap to my Combiner Wars run.  I seriously considered Liokaiser but I’ve decided to pass.  If they give us a special release of Shuttle Blast Off I’ll be all over that but it seems doubtful that it will happen.  There isn’t really anything else left for the line.

Titans Return Mindwipe

Titans Return MindwipeWave 2 of Titans Return still seems like a complete no show at almost every retailer, well, except for Walgreens, which wants nearly $20 each for them, which seems really steep.  I picked up Windwipe at a Wal-mart for considerably less, though he was the only one left on the pegs from the wave.

I really dig his fancy coffin storage box, but he’s also not nearly as cool as I expected.  The whole thing with the wings legs is finicky on both ends, though it is very unique.

His shield weapon really really doesn’t like to stay attached anywhere, at all.  His doesn’t work super well on his arm or hand, and it falls right off of his butt in Bat Mode.

Titans Return Titanmaster Brawn

Titans Return BrawnI have been passing on the Titan Masters so far, they seem… interesting, but kind of meh.  I don’t mind the Headmaster Gimmick, but I am not too keen on swapping heads around, and the Titan Masters are just heads.  The vehicles with them are all kind of bleh looking as well.  There is a regular Legends scale Brawn coming next year that a Titan Master can ride inside, and the idea of Brawn driving Brawn seems fin in a dumb way, so I went ahead and opted for this Brawn head.

This while thing is really kooky and weird.  Brawn has a little car he can drive that sort of looks like the original Brawn Jeep.  The Jeep turns into a sort of gun thing that can be weilded by larger figures but it also turns into this canoe looking thing for the Titan Master to ride in.

This is all made more absurd because the little Titan Master can either sit in the Jeep/Canoe/Gun or he can fold up as a head and mount to it.  So you can build a Brawn Gun for your larger figures.  Or have a Brawn Car.

Weekly Wednesday Haul – Imported Heroes Edition

I mentioned a bit ago that I had some more import figures on the way.  I’ve finally received them, so, here they are.

Mafex BvS Superman

Mafex SupermanA year or so ago, I picked up the Medicom Mafex Dark Knight Joker figure.  It looked pretty cool and seemed to be the best version of that Joker available.  I was worried a bit because I’d heard a lot of mixed voices on the Mafex line.  Apparently the first several releases were really bad, floppy loose joints, being the biggest issue.  The Joker isn’t quite a solid as figures from other Japanese companies, but he is a lot better than Medicom’s earlier offerings.  Eventually I added the Dark Knight Batman to accompany my Joker, and he ended up being pretty nice as well (note: the Dark Knight Batman has an earlier release that falls into the crummy category).

Anyway, I’ve decided to go ahead and just stick with Mafex for my DC figures.  The sculpts are nice, and they don’t suffer from Bull Shit Hips Syndrome like the domestic offerings tend to have.  Unlike Marvel, I’m not super into owning a zillion different DC characters, and I don’t care that they aren’t all actually from the same “universe” just that they are all “live action” based.  So I’ve picked up Mafex Superman from Batman vs Superman.  I’ll probably also get the Wonder Woman but I’m happy with my Nolan Batman.

I’m going to do a full review in the future but it’s a decent figure.  He’s got a bit of a funky Unibrow thing going on but it’s not as bad as I thought it was initially.

Figma A Link Between Worlds Link

Figma LinkI didn’t order the original Figma Link from Skyward Sword.  I’m not a huge fan of that Link design, though it seems like a pretty nice figure.  My Link tends to be the earlier Link, from the original Zelda or A Link to the Past.  Which is why I went with the recently released A Link Between Worlds Link.  I’ve been a little behind on my Zelda Lore lately but apparently A link Between Worlds is a sequel to A Link to the Past, which is kind of convenient.

This Link is younger looking and more cartoon looking than the Skyward Sword predecessor.  He comes with a ton of accessories, especially the DX version.  I’ve never played A Link Between Worlds so some of these accessories are kind of unknown to me like the little snail, or the wand thingy.  He also has a flay drawing version of Link that I imagine is important to the game.

My only real complaint is that he is a LOT smaller than expected.

Weekly Wednesday Haul – Everything’s Coming Up Red Edition

I wasn’t even aware that the latest “Civil War” wave of Marvel Legends was at all available yet when it was brought to my attention that Amazon had Scarlet Witch in stock for regular price.  I noticed they also had everyone else from the wave for $13 each.  I have vague interest in some of them but only really care about Red  Skull and Scarlet Witch, which is the focus here today, since they are they two that I ordered.

I believe this is the third and last wave listed as being for Civil War, the first being Red Onslaught, the second being Giant Man.  The BAF for this wave is Abomination.  Abomination is more of a Hulk villain but I can’t imagine we’ll ever see a “Hulk Wave”.

Scarlet Witch

Marvel Legends Scarlet WitchThis is the definite “scalper bait” for this entire wave.  The entire wave is pretty forgettable, another Cap repaint, Captain Britain, Wonder Man, Iron Skull, I don’t even remember who else.  Scarlet Witch is pretty much the last of the current Movie line up to not have a figure at all, she is a popular character and it’s a really nice figure.  the likeness isn’t amazing, but it’s still a good sculpt with nice paint. Her hands are even sculpted with her “crazy magic fingers” like she always has in the movie when throwing psychic blasts.

I’m convinced Marvel stacks the budget for movie characters slightly higher to make sure they don’t have any glaring flaws.

She comes with two flame balls that slip over her hands and the head for Abomination.

Iron Skull (Red Skull)

Marvel Legends Iron SkullRed Skull is not a particularly amazing figure, or even a real great Red Skull.

Where it hits my sweet spot is that it’s essentially just another Iron Man armor.  I’m a sucker for Iron Man armors.  Unfortunately it’s kind of one of the crappier Iron Man molds out there.   Aside from the Red Skull head, the base figure and helmet head is a straight repaint of the Mark 42/43 armor (which is I think a repaint of something earlier).  I don’t care for this mold because it has one fist and one repulsor hand, and to make things worse, the hands have these wrist cuffs that prevents the repulsor hand from being posed “up” ready to fire.

The paint job is nice, black armor with red accents and a red skull paint pattern on the helmet.  The unmasked Red Skull head is smaller than the one from the Red onslaught BAF.

Weekly Wednesday Haul – Space Boat Coast to Coast Edition

Not a ton to talk about this week, and nothing last week.  I have been on the fence for a bit on Titans Returns Scourge.  I have a couple of alright Scourge toys already with the Titaniums and the Generations.  I’ve not heard a lot of good about this Scourge, and he’s a headmaster, which Scourge is not.

Transformers Titans Returns Scourge

But Wal-Mart has knocked the price of their TR Deluxe toys down to $10.  Couple this with a drought and you get poor buying habits and a new Scourge toy.  He does have some issues, mostly because his head is wobbly, but he’s a decent Scourge.  The vehicle is more G1 than the old Generations one even if the overall design is a bit more bland.

Transformers Titans Returns Scourge

It also doesn’t help that Scourge, unlike most Transformers, has a built in gimmick to justify owning many of them.  On the show, he can clone himself into his Sweeps army.  Or maybe the Sweeps are just other Scourges that he controls, I don’t remember, other than there are a bunch of them.
