Weekly Haul

Weekly Wednesday Haul – A Fist Full of Comics Edition

Nothing physical new this week, but Amazon was having a pretty amazing sale on Marvel Digital comics, like 90% off on a LOT of books, so I binged a bit and picked up a stack of books I’ve been looking forward to reading.  I once did comics reviews, I may have to start doing it again.  Anyway…

A lot of newer stuff in there, I’ll be honest, I’m not a huge fan of the art style in a lot of older comics.  The two main drivers here were Ms. Marvel and Spider-Gwen, both series I’ve been wanting to read for a while.  I’ve started on both.  I also picked up the Kate Bishop Book because I really enjoy the Hawkeye^2 run.  The same thing can be said of Jessica Jones.  Alies was enjoyable and the Netflix series is my favorite of those shows, so it felt like a no brainer.

Spinning off a bit from Marvel, I’ve heard the Darth Vader series is pretty decent as well.  I’m always kind of wary of Star Wars Expanded Universe stuff, it tends to feel a little Fan-Fic-ish which I don’t care for.  I decided to give this one a go however, and the Doctor Aphra book I believe is related.  Whatever the case, Doctor Aphra I believe is getting a Black Series figure in an upcoming wave, and I’d like to know why.

I was a little hesitant to go for Gwenpool.  I’m not real big on Deadpool, and Gwenpool kind of feels like an even more MEME ridden version of Deadpool.  For what it’s worth I passed on Squirrel Girl for this reason, also I can’t stand the art in Squirrel Girl.

IronHeart Ironman was kind of a random gamble, I know there was some uproar over this book and it’s protagonists so I figured I’d check it out.  Mockingbird was also a random pick up.  I like what I’ve seen of the character elsewhere, so I figure I’d try out her series.

Lastly, Marvel 1602, I have almost zero idea of what this is but it sounded like a neat concept.  I generally like these sort of “re-imagined what if” style stories, probably because they tend ot be self contained while still keeping the idea and spirit of super heroes.

Weekly Wednesday Haul – BAF Edition

This week saw the completion of a couple of Build a Figures.  First off, I added the Homemade Suit Spiderman from Spiderman Homecoming.  This also gave me the last piece for the Vulture Build A Figure.  He is pretty awesome with his huge wings, but it still feels like he could have just been say, a $30 deluxe figure or something.

A while back I started collecting Giant Manparts when Ross had the wave for cheap.  I recall back when this wave was new, I had a delimma on if I wanted Cap from this wave or from the Thanos wave.  Apparently I had chosen Thanos, because it turned out that I didn’t have Giant Man’s head.  I never did finish that Thanos because I opted for the Marvel Select but I went ahead and ordered the head for Giant Man off of eBay.

I have to say, I am kind of disappointed, his arms are stupidly short for proper human proportions.
Lastly, since I have Jessica Jones now, I went ahead and picked up Elektra from the Netflix wave.  I probably was going to get her anyway.  I am still a little iffy on the others for reasons mentioned but that Daredevil is growing on me and I kind of really want to finish Man-Thing.

Weekly Wednesday Haul – Cheers Luv, Sixshot Has Arrived Edition

The thing I hate most about Pre Orders is the wait.  I ordered Nendoroid Tracer back when she was first announced in February.  And now, here she is, 6+ months later.  Nendoroid is put out by Goodsmile who also makes the Figma line.  I’ve never had a Nendoroid before.  Tracer here I believe has more articulation than a standard Nendo, but the line is basically super deformed versions of various anime and video game characters.  Tracer is pretty neat, I was a little on the fence with the concept but I’m really looking forward to Mei now.

I also managed to luck into FINALLY finding Jessica Jones from the Netflix Marvel Legends Wave.  She’s pretty much as nice as I had hoped.  Too bad we’ll probably never get Killgrave.  I imagine the next Netflix Wave will give us Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and probably Kingpin, plus some other random comic dudes.

Speaking of luck, I also found several Transformers I had assumed I’d completely missed out on with Titans Returns Sixshot and Octane.  There was also a Blitzwing but my wallet can only take so much at once and frankly, while Titans Return Blitzwing looks nice, I am alright with my Combiner Wars Blitzwing.  The old Classics Octane though, that thing is a huge pile of garbage in almost every way, he seriously needs and update.

Then there’s Sixshot.  Sixshot is a character that I’ve really wanted a good figure of for a long time.  One, I like the idea and design, even if all of his modes are mediocre “modes”.  More importantly, he kills Ultra Magnus in the Japanese show, and since Ultra Magnus is one of my favorite Autobots, it seems appropriate to have a kick ass toy of his killer.  Or something.  I also just really like his overall design.  The transformation is about as expected for all of the modes, Slightly different positions for his arms and legs for the most part.

I’ve seen a lot of complaints with this guy as well but he’s decent.  I have not had any real issues aside from his submarine mode keeps wanting to flip itself over for some reason.

Weekly Wednesday Haul – Force Friday Edition

It really feels like this kind of forced #ForceFriday deal on Star Wars toys isn’t nearly as huge as they would like for it to be.  I doubt there will ever be a good recreation of the whole Prequels toys madness.  It does make it convenient to just get everything I care about all at once I suppose.  Though that wasn’t a lot.  I’m pretty much only into Black Series figures these days.  Of the figures released I really only cared about 3 or 4 of them, maybe, one of which is Rey, which I passed on because I’d rather hold out for the Resistance outfit or possibly even the Figuarts.

I did end up picking up three Black Series figures though, first is Grand Admiral Thrawn.

The biggest travesty of Episode 7,8, and 9, is it negates the Thrawn Trilogy books, which were pretty much considered by most to BE Episode 7, 8, and 9.  They were really great and wrapped up things well.  A lot of this was due to how awesome Thrawn was.  Basically he took over the remains of the Empire after the Death Star II was destroyed.  It seems like Thrawn is still in play some how, I think maybe he has shown up in the Rebels show maybe, and I heard rumors he may yet show up in Episode 8 or 9.  He’s a nice figure for a basic officer dude.  I hate that he doesn’t include his Force Negating Ysalamiri.  It’s a small lizard with the ability to negate the use of the Force in a bubble around it’s presence.  Thrawn carries one around on his neck full time for the sole purpose of protecting himself from Jedi light and dark.

Even better, the Black Series has put out regular old classic Storm Troopers again.  I picked up two of them but unless they all vanish quickly I expect to pick up several more in the next few months.  Generic squad builders like this are so great for a lot of reasons.  They tend to look best in packs of 5 or 6, but they also work great for photos since it gives some generic dudes for any hero to battle against in great numbers.

Weekly Wednesday Haul – Ragnarok & Roll Edition

I’ve had a real problem lately with Marvel Waves where one figure becomes impossible to find, which leads to being a bit conservative when picking up figures that I’m kind of on the fence over.  Like I’ve seen a lot of the Netflix Wave of Marvel Legends but still no Jessica Jones.  I’ll probably pass on several figures from the wave without JJ, since I wouldn’t be able to finish up Man-Thing without her.  The same happened with the Warlock wave, I am skipping Polaris and Sunfire unless I manage to find Cyclops.

The hard to find folks of the Thor Ragnarok wave seem to be Ares and to a lesser extend Hela.  I managed to find both locally as well as ordering Loki for less than retail off of Amazon.  This leaves me needing the new Thor and Odinson, both of which seem to be fairly common.  Loki has been sorely missing from my MCU line up, I never did get the original Avengers version, and he’s kind of mediocre anyway.  This Loki is a much better likeness, though his cape is a little iffy on staying in place.  Hela is interesting as well.

Ares is probably the winner of this wave though.  He’s huge and imposing and pretty bad ass.  Plus, you know, huge weapons, and a nice bonus, his helmet comes off, which I didn’t know going in.  I’m also really looking forward to completing the Gladiator Hulk BAF.

Weekly Wednesday Haul – All New All Different Edition

I’ve been eying the Avengers Marvel Legends boxed set at Toys R Us for a while but have been pretty reluctant to pull the trigger.  Mostly, I just care about the Kate Bishop Hawkeye.  The Falcon Cap would be a decent little bonus item, but the third figure int he set is a really ugly Vision, which I have zero care or interest in.  I already have 2 Vision figures due to other boxed sets and releases, which is at least one more than I care bout as it is.  Fortunately, the set got pretty cheap on Amazon, so now I’ve got my Kate Bishop.

These three figures are essentially part of the “All New All Different Avengers.  I’ve already picked up Kamela Khan and Miles Morales who are part of the headlines of this group, and I’ve also recently picked up Lady Thor, who is part of the Thor Ragnarok wave.

The Ragnarok wave is one of those rare waves of Marvel Legends where I actually want the Build a Figure and most of the wave.  I could do without Odinson, but I definitely want to pick up the other 5 figures in set and that Battle Armor Hulk BAF is really sweet looking.  So far I’ve only found this one Lady Thor though, and she fits in as part of the All New All Different avengers group.  I just need to get Kid Nova to complete the group, and I already was planning to get Kid Nova eventually anyway.

Weekly Wednesday Haul – Predatory Behavior Edition

So, when I order things from overseas, meaning, from AmiAmi, I like to order several items, to help cut down on the bite of the pricey shipping.  So when I had a preorder come up, I threw on a second figure for good measure.  I’ve been wanting to get my own Revoltech Woody for a while, for “dumb meme reasons”, specifically, the Woody with the “creepy face”.  He’s a pretty fun and funny figure, and he was recently re-released.

For my add on figure, we have Figuarts Ash Ketchum, from Pokemon.  I wanted to get Team Rocket, but I couldn’t swing that one this round, so I went with Ash for now.  He’s also pretty nice, and will be fun to use with the few other Pokemon figures I have, which is a collection of little PVC Pokemon I’ve picked up here and there as well as the domestic release of Dawn.

Game of Thrones – S07E05 – Eastwatch

I just want to say, this show is really starting to show itself as a TV show, now that ti’s well surpassed the books.  Yes, there were pulls from the books, however out of order they may have occurred, but now there is definitely a lot of “showey” things going on.  For example, a happenstance gathering of hero characters.  There is also a LOT of time compression, which wasn’t quite as using in the earlier episodes.

I only really bring up the time thing because it was sort of brought up.  Sam mentioned that it had been years since he had seen Bran.  Which means a lot more time has passed than really shown.

On the whole, this was a very talky set up the future episode.  Jaime is clearly more and more disturbed by Cersei’s actions.  Though she kind of regains his trust by claiming to be pregnant with his child, though I feel like that’s probably a lie.  Tyrion still seems to have some doubts about Dany, after she has her dragon toast Randall Tarley and his son.  Tyrion seems to get over it a bit, and through Davos and Bronn, Jaime and Tyrion have a little meet up at the request of Daenerys.  Dany wants to discuss a truce to allow them to fight off the army of the dead currently marching down from the North.  As part of this meeting, Jon is going to lead a group to capture one of the dead army soldiers in order to show proof that the army is real.

This is where the “happenstance” gathering of heroes come into play.  Now cured of his Grayscale, Ser Jorah returns to Dragonstone and joins Jon’s band.  Davos, while dropping Tyrion off for his meeting heads into Flea Bottom and recruits Gendry, who is no longer rowing, who joins the crew.  After they arrive at Eastwatch, they pick up Tormund Giantsbane who is leading the Wildlings at Eastwatch along with a couple of prisoners they had in a cell, Sandor Clegane and Berric Dondarrion.

All of these random folks around the world, all brought together conveniently to form a nice little hero party of warriors.  Also Gendry looks a hell of a lot like Christian Bale now.

There is also something up with Littlefinger.  But then, Littlefinger is always up to no good.

There’s only two episodes left.  I imagine the next episode will deal primarily with capturing the zombie soldier.  And probably a bit of whatever Arya caught Littlefinger doing.  The last episode of the season will be the meeting between Cersei and Dany, and Cersei trying to pull some betrayal because she is a stupid bitch.  This will all set up the final season with the battle against the army of the dead and whomever ends up on the throne.

Oh and Gilly and Sam came across and blew off a little bit about Rehgar Targarion having his marriage annulled and being remarried in a secret ceremony.  Because someone realized that it doesn’t matter if Jon is the son of Rehgar and Lyanna Stark, he would still be a bastard with no claim to anything.
