Weekly Wednesday Haul – One Batch, Two Batch Edition

Aside from a handful of non toys, specifically, a copy of Adobe Premier/Photoshop Elements, and some camera filters for use during the upcoming Eclipse, I managed to find one lone figure from the more recently released Marvel Legends.

Specifically, The Punisher, from Netflix’s Daredevil series.  This is one of those rare waves where I want the BAF and all of the figures, but I particularly wanted Punisher, and Jessica Jones, though there was no sign of her.  I like the idea of Daredevil, and will pick him up but he seems really wide in that goofy suit.  The other figures are all cool but fall in the realm of “bonus”.  I want them, but I don’t NEED them really.  I have the old Man Thing from Toy-Biz, I have the old Wesley Snipes Blade from Toybiz, I have the old pretty kick ass Bullseye from Toybiz.  Having the updated versions is a bonus, because I like all of these characters, but it’s not required.

Game of Thrones – S07E04 – The Spoils of War

So yeah, definitely one of the best episode of the series, though if I had them all laid out there might be better in there somewhere.  I kind of feel like the clear simplifying that’s been going on is really helping things a bit, there’s isn’t anything going on over seas anymore really, there’s not random places we don’t really care about like Dorne or Riverrun.  This particular episode essentially just had three main events, and all of them pretty good.

Firstly was Arya Stark’s return to Winterfell and her reunion with Bran and Sansa.  Arya has long been one of my favorite characters.  Her entire story is very adventury and has had so many twists and turns.  She’s also turned into this crazy bad ass assassin killing machine along the way.  Everything here was so well done.  Her getting stopped at the gates was a nice reflection on how she’s been treated in the past.  Her and Sansa meeting again, despite not really getting along in the past.  Even while it’s clear Sansa is less of a snobby bitch, Arya is still making jabs at her over the whole Lady Stark thing.  The reunion with Bran and her receiving the dagger from Bran seemed like a bit of foreshadowing as well.  This knife very likely belonged to Jaime or Cersei, who are the most likely people who ordered the assassin against Bran.  How appropriate would it be if that dagger were to be used against that very same person in the long run end game of things?

Then there was her little sparing match with Brienne.  Both so similar in their desire to buck the normal trend of Ladies but both so very different in their methods.  And such a contrast in fighting styles.  They both clearly enjoyed it and it was nice to see Brienne not stop halfway to apologize for kicking over Arya.

The middle act was a short scene with Jon, once again trying to convince Dany to help him fight the Night King.  She still says not until he bends the knee to her, so, in the end, not much has changed on that front.  Theon also returned from his crushing defeat at the hands of Euron Greyjoy, and ran into Jon, who was not particularly happy to see him.  Seriously though, FUCK THEON.

Then we wrap up with quite possibly the best battle of the series.  Everyone last season was raving about Bastard Bowl, but this battle was definitely better.  The battles in general keep getting better, I remember being supremely disappointed by how tiny the Battle of the Blackwater felt.  This battle, despite just being an attack on Jaime’s little convoy of gold, felt pretty grand.  It’s an interesting pairing to be sure.  Jaime has the Lannister Army, but it’s not super clear if he has all of it, the best of it, I imagine there ares some left in Highgarden and some still in King’s Landing.  Meanwhile, they are facing the Dothraki, who are not as well armed and armored, but they are much more berserker in their fighting style and certainly not any sort of force that the Lannister soldiers have ever faced.  This kind of cuts both ways though, since the Dothraki likely haven’t faced a ton of heavily armored soliders.

Then there is the dragon, and Dany.  Definitely something Jaime and his men have never seen or faced.  The dragon alone could probably have wiped out the entire force.  Maybe.  as Bronn demonstrates late int he battle, the dragons are not as invincible as everyone thinks.  I imagine that King’s Landing will be outfitted with a great many of those giant catapults on it’s battlements in preparation for the inevitable attack by Dany’s forces.

What I particularly liked was how the battle kind of had me rooting for Jaime and Bronn.  The Lannisters are arguably the “bad guys” in the series, but I rather like both Jaime and Bronn.  Cersei is evil, these two are more just along for the ride.   I’ve also never been particularly fond of Daenerys either, though it’s clear the series is pushing her to be a top level hero character I’m supposed to love.

There was also a bit of possible set up and foreshadowing going on with Bronn.  Before the battle, Bronn was complaining that Jaime still hadn’t given him a castle yet, as promised.  While he seems to enjoy hanging around with Jaime, he also seems to be getting a little disgruntled at how things are going.  He’s essentially in it for the money, he’s not necessarily loyal to the Lannisters.  Keep in mind, that he started out in the service of Tyrion way back in Season 1, Tyrion being on the other side of the battle here.  Then there is Jaime, who, while loyal to his sister, seems to be getting increasingly frustrated by her crazy.  They no longer have any kids connecting them to each other either.  He’s also just learned that Tyrion was not responsible for killing Joffrey, which was the catalyst for Tyrion ending up in prison and killing their father and basically siding with Dany in the first place.  Perhapse something may come of all of this in the next episode,  considering both Jaime and Bronn survived the battle.  Then again, Jaime did try to run Dany through with a spear and Bronn did shoot Drogon with a giant crossbow bolt, so Daenerys likely isn’t going to be in a very forgiving mood if these two end up being prisoners.  There could be another angle here though, Tyrion kind of owes Jaime for freeing him before, Tyrion also seemed to have a bit of regret while watching the Lannister army get slaughtered by the Dothraki.  Perhapse Tyrion may end up betraying Dany and returning to King’s Landing.

Review – Transformers – RiD – Fracture

Fracture is the real turning point for the Decepticons of the Robots in Disguise line.  There was a slow build up before hand with Megatron but Fracture was the point where the line really got good.

Transformers Robots In Disguise Fracture

Fracture’s animal theme, though less obvious than Quillfire and Steeljaw, is a rooster.  This mostly presents with his little mohawk deal on his head, though his shoulders also have a sort of random almost feathery look to them.  Articulation is really nice on this figure, and he doesn’t have a lot of really bad hollow bits which tend to plague a lot of modern Transformers.

The real shinning bit is his nifty rifle.  He has a variety of pegs and handles that allow it to be handles and held in a lot of fun poses.   It’s not quite a sniper rifle, though given it’s long barrel and design it’s easy to see that it could be wielded in such a manner.  It can also be used a sort of cudgel using the center post.  It’s very versatile and add a lot to the play ability of the figure.

Fracture transforms into a decent looking Chopper style Motorcycle.  He’s large enough for other Transformers to ride on, however the width of the bike’s body makes it hard to get most figures to properly straddle the seat.  It still is a very cool looking alt mode and the Transformation is interesting despite it’s simplicity.  The front wheel and topmost center mass do some fun flippy tricks to compact down and form the robot’s torso and backpack.  The large rifle also folds in half and attaches as a large exhaust pipe.

Bottom line is that Fracture is a really fun Decepticon for the Robots in Disguise toy line.  The robot is neat and pretty dynamic and the vehicle is pretty cool looking and unique.  I have no real complaints on this guy.

Sentinel – Mega Man (Classic)

Mega Man is one video game series I have extremely fond childhood memories of.  I’ve played and finished all of the games and Mega Man 3 is one title that I played religiously back in the day.  It’s a series that just begs for a good toy line but it seems like it will never achieve the greatness I had always hoped with hundreds of Robot Masters.  Years ago Jazwares put out a short lived line and I snapped all of them up, despite their mediocre quality.  I’ve dabbled a bit in some of the model kits as well.  The newest contender in the realm of Mega Man is Sentinel Toys.  Unfortunately they seem to just be keeping the same cycle of releasing only variations of Mega Man.  There was a Cut Man but it was part of a limited 2 pack.  I don’t think they have even ventured out into the realm of Proto Man, Bass, or Zero as of this review.

Sentinel Mega Man 4"

So I opted to pick up the standard classic Mega Man, to give the line a try.  These figures of course carry an import level price, but since they are a bit smaller they aren’t too far out on the high end.  Mega Man is small to be sure, he’s quite a bit smaller than I had expected, but he is sold and advertised as 4 inches, so I don’t really know what I expected.   The sculpt and design is nice and crisp, though there are a lot of visible joint seams.

Sentinel Mega Man 4"

The seams do sort of work here, given Mega Man is a robot, but it does break up the sculpt, especially when viewed from behind.  He does end up with a really nice range of articulation however as a result of all of these joints.  He can make many classic Mega Man style poses easily and holds them quite well.

Sentinel Mega Man 4"

Mega man includes a stand as well as a couple of alternate hands, an alternate face, and a blaster arm.  These are all easily swap-able and help give some variety for posing and display.  The little extra bits for storage are nice but they don’t really do a lot to keep the pieces together.

Sentinel Mega Man 4"

Is this the best Mega Man figure available?  It’s hard to say.  It’s better than the Jazwares one by light years, but Revoltech has put out a few nice looking Mega Man figures as well.  He also isn’t quite as stylized or squat as others may want in a Mega man figure, the design is closer to the newer artwork than the older artwork and the games.  He’s definitely a nice figure though, and relatively affordable as Imports go.  He also fits pretty well with other Video Game figures like the Figuarts Mario, Figma Samus and Figma Link.

Weekly Wednesday Haul – The Vulture Edition

With the house bought and the move done, I can get back to my normal excessive waste of money each week.  Though I’m still kind of down a bit since I unexpectedly had to replace my phone.  I will probably write more about that on [Blogging Intensifies] in the future but I’ve replaced my Nokia 635 Windows hone with a Motorola G5+ Android device.

On the toys front, Wal-Mart has marked down all of those lingering Doctor Strange and Spiderman figures from $15 clearance to $9 clearance.  At $9, that’s less than I’d be paying on ebay for Build a Figure pieces to put together Vulture’s wings, and I get a bonus figure, so I picked up all of them that I could find.  I still have not seen Moon Knight, which sucks because he is the only one outside of Vulture that I wanted from the wave.  I did order his BAF piece off of ebay though, so I’m covered there.  No sign of Homeade Suit Spidey for $9 though, so I am still one piece short of those glorious wings.

I like Beetle more than expected but the rest are pretty meh.  I don’t need the Spiderman at all since I really want the two pack version with the unmasked head and the new Iron Man armor.  I’m seriously considering repainting Cosmis Spiderman into William Riker, though he would be a really buff looking Riker.  Tombstone is alright for a generic dude.
