Kitbashing is the act of taking one object or toy or whatever and building it into something else. There are many degrees to kitbashing from simple repaints and touch ups of existing toys to full creations scratch built from home made parts. It has been my experience that the most common technique is to take an existing toy or model and modify it into a different charcter, toy, or model.
Wildrider -

A simple repaint of Spychanger Crosswise as Stunticon Wildrider.
A simple repaint of Spychaner Mirage as Stunticon Dragstrip.
A repaint and modification of Spychanger Ultra Magnus into Stunticon Motormaster. The trailer was made smooth by gluing parts of a baseball card protector over top of the normal Magnus trailer.
Other Transformer Related
Pinecar Ultra Magnus -

As a Cub Scout leader I felt obligated to build a Pinewood Derby car. In order to something less traditional and more flashy I made Ultra Magnus. All parts came from a single Pinewood block.
McDonald’s Armada Ultra Magnus and Optimus
Simple repaints of McDoanld’s Armada Optimus Prime. Ultra Magnus is more of a total repaint while Prime is just a touch up.
Another simple repaint. This time doing touch ups on one of the original “oficial” McDonald’s Transformers. Way back from Beast Wars it’s “Beetle”.
Simple Alternators Prowl Mod -
I took apart the legs on my Alt Prowl and reversed them so the “pretty side” was forward in rbot mode. This does not interfere with Transformation and looks 100% better.
With a knife I modified the hinge on Sideswipe’s trunk mount to allow it to fold back into his body farther than normal. This allows the trunk to become the chest in robot mode which more resembled his G1 counterpart. The normal transformation more resembles Sunstreaker (pictured - left).
Non Tranformer
A repaint of the Mega Man show PVC Mega Man. In order to get a complete set of figures you’d have to end up with an extra Mega Man they came in two packs). I repainted one with an approximation of X’s armor from the first Mega Man X game.
Needle Man and Spark Man -
These are really old. Made from clay of some sort. Spark man is missing a couple of pieces sadley. These are representations of two of the robot masters from the game Mega Man 3.
