Review - Marvel Legends - S4 - Goliath

I’m not really much of a completist these days. There was a time when I was when it came to Transformers, but lately I pass on all sorts of figures I would have previously picked up solely for the sake of “having a complete set”. Actually I can’t say I’ve ever been a completist of anything except Transformers. The point is, I don’t have much beef with the idea of chase figures and variant figures. Toybiz can pack all the nobodies it wants one in every 10 cases, I don’t really mind.

It’s kind of ironic then that I have several of the chase figures from Toybiz’s Marvel Legends. When I found Goliath on the pegs, I was kind of surprised (series IV version). My initial thought was, “Better pick it up! It’s a chase figure!”. Then it turned to, “Nah, I don’t really care about having the rare figure, I’ll leave it for someone more deserving”. This changed to “If I leave it some scalper will probably come along and snag it first anyway”. I’m pretty sure I finally landed on “Hey, if I keep it for myself, that’s just one more member of the Avengers I can use in my display”.

Just to make any hardcore collectors out there cringe a bit, yes, I ripped this sucker open. The eBay prices don’t look so high at the moment for this guy, but I imagine there’s someone out there who paid a hundred dollars or more for one of these to store forever in it’s perfect plastic prison.

I’m pretty sure this figure is a repaint of an older Goliath figure from another line of figures. As such, he doesn’t quite have the same level of poseablility that the other Marvel Legends figures have. What he has is fairly decent however and allows him to obtain a wide range of poses. He has a cut neck, wait, and hips, with single hinged elbows, knees, and ankles, as well as universal shoulders.

Goliath’s super power allows him to change his size at will. To help emphasize this ability, the figure stands several inches taller than your average ML figure. Other avengers such as Iron Man and Hawkeye only come up to Goliath’s stomach level. Only Juggernaut really comes close to this guy in height, and even he’s a bit shorter. The costume is primarily Blue with yellow boots, gloves, and chest detail. He comes off as generically heroic yet not overly impressive.

This figure also includes two accessories of sorts. You get mini sized figures of Ant Man and Wasp. Now, I may be wrong here, but I’m pretty sure Ant Man is essentially Goliath when he’s shrunk down to a small size. I’m pretty sure Wasp is his wife. Either way, the two little figures are a nice addition; both are decently articulated for their small size. Ant Man’s tiny helmet is even removable.

All in all, this figure strikes me as surprisingly good, despite its limitations. I wouldn’t say it’s really worth hunting down or spending you life savings on through eBay, but it’s a good solid toy that will certainly help round out any Avengers display.
