Lately Will Wright has been quite prevailant in the game news blogs I frequent. His mug has been plastered all over the place. However until a few weeks ago, the little cartoon guy to the right was what I thought of as being Will Wright.
This is Dr. Wright from the Simcity series of games. Well at least he was in the older Simcity games. I don’t think he appears in the newer games. Really, making him some sort of SIMS easter egg would have been awesome.
Anyway.
Simcity has been a game series I used to love that I had quite a falling out with as it got older. Back when I played Simcity, I had to go through this arduous task of calling up my buddy, who’s game I had copied, and asking him for a password. The version we played had this sheet with like 500 cities and thier populations written on it, each one corrisponding to a series of colored squares. You had to match the square combination given to the city in order to play.
Actually technically you could still play without the codes but the game would go into “uber disaster mode” and wipe everything out.
This sheet was black wirting on maroon background so it could not be Xeroxed. I eventually copied off the front page of the sheet so I’d at least have a fighting chance at getting one of the codes I needed. It took forever to do.
Rambling again.
Now, the point here is, this is the real Will Wright.

Honestly, he’s kind of creepy looking. Still, other than the hair he does kind of look like the cartoon Dr. Wright. My flakey momory was actually pegging a Dr. Wily looking character in place of Dr. Wright.
Still, I knew the real guy wasn’t quite right. The thing is, he looks kind of like the cartoon character now, but the cartoon version is like 20+ years old. Will doesn’t look to long in the years either. I find it kind of interesting that he chose to depict himself in his games as a crazy old guy. I mean the cartoon version is clearly meant to BE Will Wright.
My whole vision of who Will Wright really is has been crushed now. I know he’s not a slick green haired mad scientist but a really goofy looking nerdy guy.
On a minor pointless trivia note,Dr. Wright once made a cameo appearance in a Zelda game (Link’s Awakening). His background theme was the Simcity music and I remember calling my friend up and tricking him into believing that I was playing Simcity on Game Boy.

He appears in two SimCity games, and as a character belongs to Nintendo.
The SimCity games are:
Sim City (SNES)
Sim City 64DD (Nintendo 64 with expansion, only avaible in Japan)
He also appears in 4 Zelda games, all for Nintendo handhelds:
Link’s Awakening as Mr. Write
Oracle of Ages as Mr. Write
Oracle og Seasons as Mr. Write
The Minish Cap as Mr. Right.
He also appeared as a trophy in Super Smash Bros Melee.
I belive the picture of him in the article is for the SimCity manual, here are some other pictures of his apperances:

It was also just today revealed he would be an assist trophy in Super Smash Bros Brawl (for the Nintendo Wii).
I’m a huge nerd.

You know, I never thought about the character being owned by Nintendo. He wasn’t in the original PC version that I’d played previous to the SNES versions but now that I think about it, he doesn’t show up in any of the PC versions or sequels.
